Community Fruit Harvesting

On Saturday, HLC invited a voluntary group called ‘Community Fruit Harvesting’ to harvest the fruit from fruit trees that are being removed (along with houses) in the former ‘off base’ housing area at Hobsonville Point as part of the wider Hobsonville Point development. The group picked about six boxes of fruit, weighing approximately 25kg each, of lemons and grapefruit.

fruit harvest1It was great to see this fruit harvested and being put to some good. Community Fruit Harvesting is a charity that picks unwanted fruit from backyards and orchards around New Zealand and shares it with those in need.

Although it is sad to see these fruit trees going, fruit trees have been and will continue to be planted in parks at Hobsonville Point which includes citrus, feijoa, and apples, which the community has access to. If you want to talk to Di Celliers, the coordinator, her contact details are: 0212289020. They are happy to come to private homes, even just one tree.
